After surgery: preparing for a home physiotherapy assessment

Keep the surgeon’s instructions central

Different operations require different rehabilitation plans. Before arranging physiotherapy, gather the discharge summary, existing exercise instructions and any restrictions supplied by the surgical team. Ask that team to clarify missing instructions rather than guessing which movements are permitted.

Describe the actual home environment

The route from the entrance to the room, stairs, the bed and the usual chair may affect how a visit is planned. Explain lift access and whether help is available when the therapist arrives. If you use a walking aid already prescribed by your team, have it available.

You do not need to purchase new equipment before discussing your situation. If a device is recommended later, ask what it is for, how it should be used and whether purchase or rental costs are included in the quoted service.

Bring a short list of questions

• Which existing instructions should I continue to follow?
• What goals are appropriate at this stage?
• What should I practise between visits, and with what assistance?
• How will progress be recorded and discussed?
• When is the next surgical or medical review?

Confirm arrangements before committing to a package

Ask whether the first booking is an assessment and how the follow-up schedule will be decided. Confirm the duration, location-specific fee and cancellation terms. Avoid treating the number of sessions in a package as a medical recovery deadline.

If your condition changes before the visit, contact the treating team as appropriate and inform the booking team. A routine physiotherapy appointment is not a substitute for urgent postoperative assessment.
