Understanding Linea Alba Separation in Diastasis Recti
Diastasis Recti Abdominis (DRA) is the unnatural separation of the two vertical bellies of the rectus abdominis muscle along the midline connective tissue seam known as the linea alba. During pregnancy, uterine expansion and hormonal relaxin stretch this tissue.
When the linea alba remains overstretched post-delivery, the abdomen bulges outward ('mummy tummy'), causing poor core stability, compensatory lower back pain, and pelvic floor dysfunction in new mothers across Kolkata.
- Visible ridge or 'doming' along the midline when sitting up from a bed or lifting a baby.
- Persistent lower back ache and feelings of core weakness during daily lifting tasks.
- A gap measuring greater than 2 finger-widths between the rectus bellies during a head lift.
How to Self-Check for Diastasis Recti at Home
To test for DRA, lie flat on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the bed. Place fingers horizontally across your midline just above the navel. Slowly lift your head and shoulders 2 inches off the bed while feeling the edges of the rectus muscles.
A positive test is felt when fingers sink into a soft gap between the muscle edges. Clinical focus is not just closing the finger width, but restoring tension and springiness in the connective linea alba tissue.
- Feel for depth and tension: A firm, shallow gap indicates good deep fascial tone.
- Watch for doming: If the midline bulges upward like a tent, intra-abdominal pressure is uncontrolled.
- Assess 3 points: 2 inches above the navel, directly at the navel, and 2 inches below the navel.
Safe Core Rebuilding vs. Dangerous Exercises to Avoid
Traditional sit-ups, planks, double leg lifts, and Pilates crunches are strictly contraindicated in early DRA because they force the rectus muscles outward, worsening the separation.
Rehabilitation relies on activating the deep transverse abdominis (TVA) and pelvic floor in synergy, knitting the abdominal wall back together from the inside out.
CareMotion's female physiotherapists provide private in-home evaluations in Kolkata, measuring diastasis and guiding progressive core healing.
- Transverse abdominis activation: Exhale gently while drawing the lower belly inward toward the spine.
- Heel slides and modified tabletop taps maintaining a completely flat, non-doming midline.
- Always log-roll onto your side before sitting up from bed to prevent intra-abdominal pressure spikes.
